A Study on the Living Conditions of the deaf in taegu

Abstract
This study was conducted to collect councelling information for the hearing handicapped on their social status, marriage, family relations vocation and housing. The subjects consist of 173 adult deaf people registered with Taegu Branch of the Korea Welfare Society of the Deaf.
The findings are; first, 69% of the subjects are in their 20¢¥s and 30¢¥s. Only 14% of them are educated at the level of high school or above. Approximately 91% of the male subjects are presently employed as simple manual laborers and 61% of the entire subjects are either protestants or catholics; Secondly, 59% of the investigated got married for love, showing a higher rate than the average of the normal people. It was also found that 72% of the investigated held the wedding ceremony at commercial wedding halls. The main influential factors in the selection of their spouses are the personality(53%) and the outappearances(21%), with a result of 60% satisfied couples. The rate of dissatisfied marriage was relatively high, with the divorce and illegitimate marriage rate 71% respectively;
Thirdly, 70% of the couples have fewer than two childern, revealing their favor of the nuclear family; And fourth, that 31% of the subjects have the monthly incomes less than 300,000 won, while 25% of them earn more than 500,000 won in the same period, both groups bracketting into the lower income classes. In terms of the properties, 60% of them have less than 100,000,000 won¢¥s worth of real estate, compaired with more 8% of them have more than 100,000,000 won¢¥s worth. Those who are financially aided by their parents stand at 41%, against 16% of the questionnaired are supporting their parents. And finally the deaf who own their own houses are estimated at 32%, compaired with the average house ownership in Taegu and its surrounding areas.
